Gynaecomastia Surgery North Sydney

Breast Procedures

Gynaecomastia, commonly known as “Man Boobs,” is a medical term used to describe enlargement of male breast tissue and fat just under the nipple in male adolescents and men.

Gynaecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

It is a prevalent issue that can affect males of different ages, and for some, can be a cause of discomfort, embarrassment and anxiety. Gynaecomastia in adolescence is common, but tends to resolve after 1-2 years. Gynaecomastia in adulthood can result from various factors such as hormone imbalances, obesity, certain medications, steroid use and various medical conditions. Speaking to a medical professional to establish the cause of this condition is vital before considering male breast reduction surgery.

Consultation

During your consultation Dr Alaina Taylor will take an extensive medical history and conduct a physical examination to ascertain the potential cause of your condition and evaluate its degree. The severity of your gynaecomastia will determine the surgical plan. You will need to disclose your medical history, including any pre-existing conditions you may have and your current and past medications. During your consult, the information you disclose is vital in creating a treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

The procedure

Gynaecomastia surgery can take up to approximately three hours depending on the degree and technique required for correction. The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital facility either as a day surgery procedure or requires overnight stay. During your consultation with Dr Taylor, she will have determined whether your excess fat and glandular tissue needs to be removed via liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. Incisions are generally placed around the nipple-areola complex. Once the desired outcome has been achieved, sutures are used to close the incisions, and dressings are applied to the surgical sites. In some cases, drains may be inserted to collect excess fluid or blood for several days after your surgery.

Following the procedure, some pain and swelling are expected. Pain medication can be prescribed to help ease the discomfort, and a compression garment will also need to be worn for at least six weeks to reduce the swelling. You will need to take one to two weeks off work and avoid heavy lifting and other strenuous physical activities for six to eight weeks.

Risks and Complications

All surgery causes side effects such as bruising, swelling, some oozing or small amount of bleeding from wounds, new scars, infection and wound healing problems. There are risks associated with general anaesthesia.
With any procedure you choose to undergo, potential risks and complications can occur, and it is vital to understand them before deciding on surgery.

Possible risks and complications associated with male breast reduction surgery include:

  • Poor scarring
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Changes to nipple and skin sensation including nipple loss
  • Infection
  • Asymmetry
  • Small lumps due to fat necrosis
  • Need for secondary surgery

It is important that you follow Dr Taylor’s aftercare instructions to ensure minimal scarring occurs where possible and you achieve the most optimal results. Dr Taylor will go into more depth about the associated risks and complications during your consultation.

Gynaecomastia Surgery North Sydney

Gynaecomastia, characterised by the enlargement of male breast tissue, can significantly impact a person’s quality of life and in severe cases, causes skin irritation. Gynaecomastia, also known as male breast reduction surgery, offers a solution to this condition. Gynecomastia surgery is a male breast reduction procedure designed to reduce the bulk of breast tissue in men.

People choose to have this procedure to remove excess tissue and fat from their breasts.  This procedure includes liposuction, surgery, or both.

Signs of Gynaecomastia

Signs of gynecomastia can range from a little extra tissue around the nipples to breasts that are bigger and stand out more. It can occur in one breast or both. Breast tissue can sometimes be painful, but this isn’t always the case.

Causes of Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia, the enlargement of male breast tissue, can occur due to various causes. Understanding these underlying factors is crucial in addressing the condition effectively. Here are some common causes of gynaecomastia:

Hormonal Imbalance:

Hormonal fluctuations play a significant role in gynaecomastia development. An imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels can lead to breast tissue enlargement. Hormonal imbalance can also be caused by ageing, certain medical conditions, or the use of medications.

Medications:

Certain medications can lead to the development of gynaecomastia. These may include:

  • Anti-androgens

Drugs used to treat prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, or certain hormonal conditions.

  • Anabolic Steroids

Often used illegally for muscle building, these substances can disrupt hormone levels.

  • Anti-anxiety Medications

Some benzodiazepines and antidepressants have been associated with gynaecomastia.

  • Anti-ulcer medications

Certain proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers have been linked to gynaecomastia development.

Obesity:

Excessive weight and obesity can lead to gynaecomastia due to increased estrogen production from fat cells. The excess fat can also make the breasts appear larger, exacerbating the condition.

Use of Recreational Drugs:

The use of certain recreational drugs, such as marijuana, amphetamines, and heroin, has been associated with gynaecomastia development.

Types of Gynaecomastia Surgery In North Shore

Gynaecomastia surgery offers various techniques tailored to the severity of the condition. The two primary surgical approaches are:

Liposuction Technique

This approach involves the removal of excess fat through small incisions, typically using suction. It is suitable for cases where the excess breast tissue is primarily composed of fat. The recovery process is generally straightforward, with minimal scarring.

Excision

This technique is utilised when there is an excess of glandular tissue or sagging skin. It involves making incisions to remove the tissue and reshape the chest. The recovery process may be slightly longer, but the results can be more dramatic.

Combination Approach

Selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in gynaecomastia surgery is essential for a successful outcome. Thoroughly research their credentials, certifications, and patient reviews. Schedule a consultation to discuss your goals, ask questions about the procedure, and assess the surgeon’s expertise.

Who Is The Eligible Candidate For Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Anyone who has some degree of gynaecomastia is eligible for surgery. Beyond that, people generally must meet the requirements associated with any elective surgery.

This includes:

  • Not having a blood disorder
  • Lack of immunosuppressive medication
  • Nicotine and tobacco product abstinence prior to and throughout recuperation from surgery.
  • Taking care of any underlying medical conditions
  • The ability to take the necessary time off from school, employment, or other obligations in order to heal.
  • Having one or more individuals who can serve as carers during your recovery is advantageous.

What Are The Benefits of Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery offers a range potential benefits for individuals struggling with enlarged male breast tissue. Here are some benefits of surgery:

Chest Contour Enhancement

The surgery is designed to reduce the size and reshape the male breast, resulting in a more masculine chest contour. This improvement in chest contour can enhance body proportions and reinstate a more masculine aesthetic.

Enhanced Quality Of Life

By managing the physical and psychological aspects of gynaecomastia, the procedure can alleviate feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment, and social stigma associated with enlarged male breasts.

Increased Comfort and Physical Activity

Gynaecomastia surgery can improve physical comfort and alleviate any discomfort or tenderness associated with enlarged breast tissue. It allows individuals to engage in physical activities and exercises without hindrance or self-consciousness.

Long-Lasting Results

Once the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are surgically removed, the chances of recurrence are minimal. However, it is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle and manage weight fluctuations to preserve the results achieved through surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between fat transfer and fillers?
As opposed to synthetic fillers, the process of a fat transfer keeps the fat cells permanently where they are placed. They use a person’s own fat tissue for injection, rather than filler materials.
Am I a good candidate for abdominoplasty surgery?
The best candidates for abdominoplasty surgery patients are those who are fit, have already achieved any weight loss goals. Abdominoplasty surgery is not a substitute for diet and exercise and can be associated with increased risks in patients who are overweight or obese. Women who are planning future pregnancies should also delay abdominoplasty surgery.
How much does breast reconstruction surgery cost?
The cost for breast reconstruction is determined by the extent and complexity of the procedure, as well as surgeon costs, anaesthetist fees, hospital fees, and post-operative recovery costs. Because of its reconstructive nature, a portion of the procedure costs may be covered by Medicare or your private health insurer, but you will need to check what criteria you must meet to be eligible.
What is recovery from breast revision like?
Recovery from breast revision surgery will be similar to the recovery experienced following the initial implant procedure. It is recommended that you minimise strenuous activity and exercise after surgery. You should also avoid wearing underwire bras to facilitate proper healing of the underlying breast tissue.
